Carlsberg - Elephant
Carlsberg - Elephant
Style: Euro Strong Lager
ABV: 7.2%
Origin: København, Denmark
This beer pours a rich, deep-golden color with good head and lacing. It's a 7.2% ABV lager that has a nicely floral nose and a balanced malty flavor profile. Not too challenging for an immature palate, but certainly an enjoyable and easy-drinking lager even for the connoisseur. A simple, but solid Euro lager with a surprising kick.
Carlsberg Elephant is vinous and fruity with flavors of apple, melon, banana and caramel balanced by a dry bitterness. You also sense hints of oak bark, nuts and pine needles. The ample use of malt gives Elephant a vinous and rich character. The high hop content in Elephant gives a masculine bitter bite to the beer.
Strong beers, like Carlsberg Elephant, are very often seasonal products, and Carlsberg Elephant was indeed created on the basis of a number of special, light-coloured festive brews and the brewmasters' experience with Carlsberg's pale and very strong Easter Brew just after the Second World War. After some years as an export brand and some adjustments to the label design, the famous, strong Carlsberg Elephant with its unique and very personal bock character was born in 1959.
The elephant on the beer label is inspired by the two pairs of life-size, elephant statues which form part of the main entrance to Carlsberg’s Brewery in Copenhagen. The Elephant Gate has become a famous Danish landmark and gives visitors to the brewery a majestic welcome.

Serving Suggestions:
Should be served at 5-8 °C. (41-46 °F) Carlsberg Elephant is full-bodied beer with a complex aroma and therefore a good draft beer. It is best suited for winter dishes such as heavy soups and stews with rodfrugtmos.
This beer's high alcohol and dry end provides good counterbalance to the traditional rustic fare such as yellow peas, roast duck or fried eel. Excellent for thick soups, stews or braised meat dishes accompanied by rodfrugtemos or roasted vegetables. Carlsberg Elephant goes very well with all spicy dishes, and it is particularly well suited for the Thai kitchen, Cajun dishes and Mexican food. It also goes well with rustic, European dishes with root vegetables and/or sauces. Carlsberg Elephant is also excellent with a wide variety of medium-strong cheeses.

Jacobsen - Original Dark Lager
Jacobsen - Original Dark Lager
Style: Munich Dunkel Lager
ABV: 5.8%
Origin: København, Denmark
From the website:
Jacobsen Original Dark Lager is brewed by the oldest recipe we have been able to find in Carlsberg's archives. Namely, JC Jacobsen's original recipe from 1854. To recreate the flavor, which was tasted by Jacobsen and his contemporaries, we have added salts and minerals on the basis of analyzes of water from JC Jacobsen time.
Jacobsen Original Dark Lager's main raw material is Münich malt from Germany. We have also added a "floor malt" from England, just as was done in the 1850's. The beer is fermented at low temperature to give a specially mild and rounded grainy, caramel flavour.
With its clear bread, malt and caramel aromas and its distinctive hop finish, Original Dark is excellent for the uncomplicated Nordic cuisine. Roasted, grilled or fried foods - red meats rather than fish. It goes well with dishes with cheese, cream or butter. Weather allowing, you may want to fire up the grill and serve Original Dark Storage with chicken, beef, spicy sausages or hamburgers with fried potatoes and fried onions or roasted vegetables.

Carlsberg - Carls Porter
Carlsberg - Carls Porter
Style: Baltic Porter
ABV: 7.8%
Origin: København, Denmark
"Also labelled 'Imperial Stout' in the small print, this strong beer from Carlsberg was purchased in Denmark. It pours inky black with a moderate tan-coloured head. There is something immediately vegetal and slightly off-putting on the nose, with a slightly dank, herbal note, but then a roasted barley and coffee bean richness comes through, as well as a sweet, plummy fruitiness.
On the palate there is a terrific sweetness to this, with a medium bodied but rich texture, and then bittering espresso and liquorice notes coming through.
Moderate carbonation leaves this quite clean and smooth, with a real tension between the intense, sweet flavours and all the dark roasted malts and a bite of hops too. A very good beer that for me is a touch too sweet to enjoy more than a few sips, but lots of drama and lots of interest." - Tom Cannavan
From the website:
Carl Porter was initially based on the British imperial stouts and considered to be Carlsberg's oldest specialty and Carl Jacobsen's companion piece to his brewing education. The taste is great, rich and sweet with a touch of dry bitterness and aftertaste has a good balance of hops and malt. The color is almost black with a nice mocha colored foam crown. The scent has distinctive notes of heavily roasted malts with a touch of English liquorice.
Serving suggestions:
Carls Porter has many interesting possibilities for food pairing because of its strong, fullness of flavor. Blue cheese is a delicate opponent of the roasted tones and high alcohol, making it a wonderful pairing. This beer can also be used for soy marinated meat dishes with beef and veal. It should be noted that this beer has a natural ability to match chocolate desserts and desserts based on eggs and whipping cream, where the beer helps with its dry roasted impression that accentuates the sweetness of desserts.
Carls Porter should be served at 10-15° C
